[ARCHIVED] Benedict Beef Inc.

Benedict Beef Agripreneur Business Spotlight

Kneehill County is proud to highlight the Agripreneurs and businesses that make our community great.

Our first Agripreneur Spotlight features Benedict Beef Inc., of Wimborne, Ab.  Owned and operated by Derek and Lois Benedict and their four daughters, this 4th generation family farm produces premium quality beef from birth to plate.  The Benedict family is dedicated to providing a quality product while maintaining high standards for environmental sustainability and animal welfare.

Lately, we’ve heard a lot about hormone and steroid free beef.  Derek says, “our beef is raised without the use of added hormones or steroids.”  He adds, “that doesn’t mean added hormones are bad.  We just don’t need to use them in our management program.” Benedict Beef is finished on grain and hay ration.  By feeding a grain ration it allows for a more tender and juicier product due to a higher marbling throughout the beef.  All their cows and calves pasture graze throughout the summer months.

Benedict Beef is sold by the whole, half, or quarter.  Customized cutting instructions are designed to personalize the order to fit your needs. Buying in bulk is the most economical way to purchase beef. Being a relatively small operation, Benedict Beef is available from July to November.  According to Derek, “Our calves are hand-selected when finished to provide the best quality beef product to our customers.”

Find it locally: Private, direct sales are available by contacting Benedict Beef. When supply allows, Benedict Beef can also be purchased at Bauer Meats (Torrington) and The Farm Basket (Three Hills). Ask for them by name.

This family farm is well versed in direct sales of premium beef.  Back in 2003, the BSE crisis hit and many friends and co-workers asked how they could help the beef industry.  The answer was, “fill your freezer”. And area families have been enjoying Benedict Beef ever since.

Derek’s advice for new Agripreneurs: “Sometimes the best opportunities arise out of challenging situations”
